Event description

Description

Drop in to this workshop at the farmers market, where, under expert guidance, you will unleash your creative spirit. Learn a new skill and create two felted flowers – one to keep, and one to become part of a community art installation to be displayed at Parramatta Park. The artwork will celebrate the contribution of Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of the fifth governor, to the gardens of the Government Domain, now Parramatta Park – the People’s Park. Mrs Macquarie was instrumental in having a number of gardens cultivated in the Parramatta Park area around Government House. These included The Lemon Hedge walk, a Kitchen Garden and a formal ‘English’ garden. The ‘felted’ flowers made by participants would be representative of the variety of flowers found in these gardens and on the fruit bearing trees that were planted in the area. She also distributed bulbs of “Flag Lilies” or “Bearded Irises” as gifts to Settlers and Convicts whilst accompanying her husband on trips around the colony. Remnants of these lilies still grow wild in roadside verges in Camden and Campbelltown.
