About this event

  • 1 day 6 hours

Explore intaglio printmaking through the creation of tonal imagery. Learn how to paint directly onto the copper plate to create painterly marks and use acid like watercolour - perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using a brush.

During the course you will develop the skills to use aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite and open-bite techniques. In the process of creating an original print, you will experiment with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images.

This course is a great way to build on upon an intaglio artists established skills (or those acquired in our Etching #1 class) – and will cover plate preparation, mark making with sugarlift and the application of aquatint, along with paper preparation, registration techniques and the correct use of an etching press to print an original fine art print.

For the two-day duration of the course, APW will provide materials needed (including inks, copper plates, paper, printing materials etc). All participants will be able to create an image up to 12cm x 18cm in size and we encourage you to bring to the course any any ideas, sketches, drawings, photos, etc that may assist you in articulating and developing your image.
