Join researchers, artists and curators as they address some of the key areas of thought about contemporary art in the region, and its histories, conditions and voices.

10.00-11.30am | SESSION 1 | CONNECTIVITIES: CONDITIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY ART IN SPACES OF TRANS-REGIONALITY
The Asia-Pacific is often framed in terms of its geographic sub-regions, delineated along certain political, cultural and ethnic lines. Many of the current definitions that divide and group these continental compass points and island groups arose in colonial or post-colonial contexts, yet remain active in a range of fields of discourse, including that of contemporary art. Meanwhile artists are now crossing geographic regions and cultures at an unprecedented rate, both physically and through the assimilation of ideas from other cultures, developing new platforms for exchange and revisiting earlier relationships. As global power centres shift and evolve, and trans-regional dialogues reshape existing alliances and divisions, new global perspectives have the power to influence the production and circulation of art today, while artists reveal new commonalities, possibilities and restrictions beyond existing boundaries.

1.00-2.30pm | SESSION 2 | WHO SPEAKS: SELF-DETERMINATION AND CULTURAL RESILIENCE ON A GLOBAL STAGE The expanded ‘global’ terrain over which contemporary art today is made and disseminated is often celebrated for its embrace of greater diversity. Within this enlarged area of activity however, the capacity for movement, access to technology and ability to engage in the ‘international’ is often privileged at the expense of more localised forms of expression and ways of knowing.
While neutral in look, the physical spaces in which we gather to talk and share perpetuates biases towards those educated within established systems of discourse and presentation where an emphasis is placed on the establishment of individual authority rather than communal or group knowledge exchange and transfer. Protocols - significant to many - around who speaks, on whose behalf and with what authority are not always clear or honoured.

3.00-4.30pm | SESSION 3 | MAKING HISTORIES: INSTITUTIONS, INITIATIVES AND ARTISTIC ECOLOGIES Recent years have seen increasing institutional and commercial interest in the art histories of the Asia-Pacific, both within the region and beyond it. National and international museums, educational institutions and the market are building collections, consolidating knowledge and assimilating regional modernities and genealogies of making into mainstream art discourse. At the same time, new initiatives inside and outside of art markets and institutions are deepening knowledge and interpretations of complex histories, revisiting and reframing existing accounts, and challenging accepted ideas of cultural and social development. What does this interplay of forces mean for the writing and re-writing of art history outside the Euro-American canon? How does a given practice obtain legitimacy within this context, and what happens when it does? What are the implications for contemporary art, and how does it contribute?
