About this event

PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ANU GENDER INSTITUTE

Brazen Hussies traces the roots of the feminist movement in Australia between 1965 and 1975, a time which saw women gaining many rights and access to services we now take for granted. With narration by Sigrid Thornton, more than 25 activists and other key figures share their stories and recollections, including Martha Ansara, Gillian Leahy, Elizabeth Reid (advisor on women’s affairs to Gough Whitlam), Barbara Creed, Suzanne Bellamy, Sara Dowse, Eva Cox, Pat O’Shane, and Biff Ward.

Written and directed by Catherine Dwyer, Brazen Hussies draws on a staggering source-pool of over 4000 still photographs, posters and feminist publications, and more than 800 film clips from news footage and personal collections. Including rare archival and previously unseen material, the result is a fascinating insight into the forces that have shaped Australian society.

This screening will be followed by an exclusive panel discussion, chaired by ANU Gender Institute Convenor Fiona Jenkins, and featuring two stars of the women’s movement, Elizabeth Reid AO and Biff Ward.
