The Impact and Material Traces of Globalisation in the Mangareva Islands (French Polynesia) in the Nineteenth-century.

For dietary requirements and any other enquiries please email <a href="mailto:oceania-events@unimelb.edu.au" title="mailto:oceania-events@unimelb.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">oceania-events@unimelb.edu.au</a>.Talanoa (Discussion):In the context of European colonisation of the Pacific in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Mangareva archipelago saw the establishment of a Christian mission in 1834, which served as a starting point for the Catholic evangelisation of Polynesia. This undertaking placed Mangareva at the heart of the world, also in global trade and the transformations linked to globalisation. We propose to discuss the processes of modernisation and social transformation experienced in the Mangareva archipelago in the 19th century, in light of a comparative study of archives and archaeological remains. We will focus in particular on the transformations of the archipelago's landscape, with the construction of an estimate of one hundred colonial buildings made of coral and basalt that are still preserved today. We will also discuss the introduction of new products and everyday objects and their adaptation to the native way of life; and finally, the reception of these transformations by the indigenous population, which took different forms of resilience and adaptation.Speakers:Dr. Emilie Perez is a PhD archaeologist living and working in Tahiti, affiliated at the University of French Polynesia (EASTCO). There and at the Institut Supérieur de l'Enseignement Privé Polynésien (ISEPP), she teaches a variety of courses such as Polynesian History, Intercultural Communication in Heritage practices, while mentoring students in developing career goals. From 2019 to 2024, she worked for the Ministry of Culture and Environment of French Polynesia on the drafting of Te Henua Enata – The Marquesas Islands project for UNESCO World Heritage List.Moanatea Claret is a Polynesian archaeologist with a Master's degree from the University of French Polynesia. Alongside Dr. Perez, Moanatea works as a consultant archaeologist in Tahiti, carrying out various archaeological projects that include surveys, excavations prior to land management, and cultural heritage evaluation. From 2022 onwards, Moanatea is a research assistant in the “Archaeologies of community and colonialism in Oceania”project led by Pr. James Flexner (University of Sydney).Meitaki and thank you.
