An Introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) - 2-day in person Workshop
26th and 27th May 2026 - In person only
This 2–day workshop will provide participants with an overview of DBT theory and principles as well as key DBT skills from each module (Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance). It will include a background on dialectics, including the central dialectic of behaviour change and acceptance principles. This workshop is suitable for mental health clinicians new to DBT as well as those with prior experience who are looking to refresh skills. The training is interactive, involving didactic learning augmented with role play, discussion and exercises.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Understand BPD from a DBT perspective including prevalence, causes and evidence for DBT
- Understand DBT theory and principles, including behavioural theory, validation and dialectics
- Apply the key DBT skills from each module (Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance)
- Apply the key tools from DBT including diary cards and chain analyses
Facilitators:
Marianne Weddell is Clinical Manager & Clinical Specialist of Spectrum. She is a Clinical Psychologist with 20 years’ experience in public and private setting treating a wide range of disorders, managing teams, training staff and supervising/mentoring clinicians. She has a special interest and significant experience with borderline personality disorder, in particular developing service and family systems to work effectively in this space. She believes in therapy as a tool to help people understand themselves, their passions and build a life worth living.

Who should register? Mental health clinicians and other professionals working with people with personality disorders.
Cost: $600 exc. booking fees (payable by credit card only).
Lunch: A light lunch, morning and afternoon tea including a vegetarian selection is provided.
Getting to Spectrum: Spectrum is located at 110 Church Street, on the corner of Church Street and Tweedie Place. Entrance is via the front of the building, to the right of the Skoda car dealership.
Public transport:
- Tram 78 on Church Street. Alight at Tweedie Pl/Church Street (Stop 63).
- Tram 109 on Victoria Parade (about a 5 min walk to 110 Church Street)
- Tram 75 on Bridge Rd (about a 7 min walk to 110 Church Street)
Car parking:
There is very limited 2 hour street parking available in the area. All day parking is available in:
- Richmond Traders, 271 Bridge rd, Richmond – 7 minute walk ($12/day)
- 35 Elizabeth Street, Richmond – 11 minute walk ($20 a day)
- 1 Allowah Terrace, Richmond – 12 minute walk (about $26/day)
Cancellation policy: If your circumstances change and you no longer can attend this event after you have registered please email spectrumtraining@easternhealth.org.au no later than one (1) week prior to the event to cancel and/or be issued with a refund. A refund will not be issued if notification has not been received within this time frame and you will be required to pay for the event. Please note that Eventbrite booking fees cannot be refunded.
