Drawing on expertise in map restoration and historical cartography, the presentation reveals how centuries-old maps were conceived, printed, and preserved.Attendees will gain an understanding of traditional printing methods such as copperplate engraving, woodcut, and lithography, and how each influenced the look and feel of the final work. The talk will also cover the materials used—paper, vellum, and inks—and the unique characteristics they impart. Examining antique maps in person, the audience will learn to identify subtle differences in techniques and styles that can help determine a map’s origin and age.Equally important is an examination of condition: the common signs of wear, damage, and ageing, including foxing, staining, tears, and fading, as well as the impact of environmental factors over centuries. Additionally, insights into conservation approaches that respect the integrity of an antique map while stabilising it for the futureWhether you’re a collector, historian, or simply curious, this talk offers an accessible and visually rich exploration into the making and survival of antique maps.This event is presented as part of the Sydney Rare Book Week 2025 program.
