About this event

Women's Health In the North and Zoe Belle Gender Collective invite prevention of gender-based violence practitioners to join us for Allyship in Action: Building bystander action for trans and gender equity.

There is emerging evidence to suggest that rigid gender stereotypes and dominant forms of masculinity drive both violence against women and violence against trans and gender diverse people. However, there is limited practice guidance on how to address both these forms of violence in shared prevention initiatives, or at least make prevention of violence against women initiatives inclusive of trans women and gender diverse people.

In this practice forum, we will strengthen our individual and shared capability to take bystander action against transphobia and transmisogyny in and through our work. By attending this forum, you will have the chance to:

  • Learn from experienced prevention practitioners about transmisogyny, transphobia and bystander action.
  • Hear stories and insights from a lived experience panel of trans women and gender diverse people.
  • Participate in an applied learning activity, exploring bystander action in relation to diverse case scenarios across professional and public settings.
  • Engage in focused strategic planning, to identify opportunities to address transphobia and transmisogyny in and through your work.
  • Access valuable resources to support the ongoing integration of trans inclusive approaches to prevention of gender-based violence.
  • Network with other practitioners to learn what other organisations are doing to make their practice more inclusive of trans and gender diverse communities.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided. Limited places available.

Registrations close 10 April; places are limited, RSVP as soon as possible.

Learning objectives:

  • Build knowledge, skills and confidence in how to address transphobia and transmisogyny in prevention of gender-based violence work.
  • Identify opportunities to address the shared drivers to mainstream allyship approaches in regional and organisational action planning.

Pre-learning (highly recommended)

It is expected that attendees have a foundational knowledge of gender-based violence and bystander action, as these concepts will form building blocks to the content covered in the forum. To help attendees get the most out of the forum, WHIN will be holding Bystander Action Refresher Training for anyone who is new to prevention and/or needs a refresher on the basics of bystander action. This will ensure readiness to participate in the forum and maximise learning outcomes and skill development.
