All That Glitters - Exhibition by Ling
Gold-coated discarded objects challenge how we define value in this bold Fitzroy warehouse exhibition.
All That Glitters: A Melbourne exhibition that turns the everyday into something extraordinary
Inside a raw industrial warehouse in Fitzroy, a new solo exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Ling reframes how we think about value, beauty and perception. All That Glitters presented as part of the artist’s decade‑long conceptual project The Allure of Gold transforms discarded objects into compelling works of art by coating them entirely in gold paint.
The materials are familiar, once‑useful items, everyday devices, even things destined for the tip, yet their golden surfaces instantly elevate them into something uncanny and irresistible. Commercial machinery and obsolete objects maintain their original forms, but in their new gilded guise they appear both precious and dislocated from their past lives.
Set against the exposed brick, black and gold paint and stark lighting of the Fitzroy space, these sculptures and accompanying photographic works create a striking dialogue between surface and substance. All That Glitters isn’t interested in luxury for its own sake - it’s a thoughtful examination of how easily worth can be conferred, and how image often outweighs utility in contemporary culture.
