Join the AFTA Management Team as they embark on a National Roadshow to discuss the most pertinent issues affecting AFTA / ATAS Members. The workshops will discuss everything from AFTA’s role in representing travel agent members at both state and federal level and the most current and pressing issues AFTA is fighting, through to ATAS accreditation and the new Advertising Guidelines and how it applies to you! We will cover the latest changes to the AFTA Chargeback Scheme (ACS) as well as reveal some interesting results on the success of the ATAS television commercials.

How will the Australian economy play out in 2020 and what are the implications for travel agencies, wholesalers, tour operators and the industry at large?

The Reserve Bank cut the cash rate three times last year. Are there more rate cuts in store and what does this mean for consumer confidence and travel spending?

Why ATAS Accreditation is more important than ever.

The AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS) is the cornerstone of the Australian travel industry. It sets standards, future proofs and protects the integrity of our industry. Join this session to hear how ATAS, via the Charter and Code of Conduct upholds industry standards through continual monitoring and enforcement.

This session covers:

  • An overview of 2019 activity under the ATAS Charter and Code.
  • Lessons from common complaints - are you implementing best practice to avoid common issues?
  • Understanding the new ‘Advertising Guidelines for ATAS Participants’ and how it applies to you.
  • Australian Consumer Law update.
  • AFTA Chargeback Scheme (ACS) - New supplier directory, excluded suppliers, payout of claims, Excite, Tempo and ACS FAQs.

Are the ATAS television commercials stacking up?

Presenter: Joanne Arancibia, Head of Marketing and Communications

We’re all guilty of being ‘couch’ critics. However, as business owners and managers you have the right to know just how well the ATAS television commercials are performing.

You asked and AFTA listened. In November last year, we put the commercials to the test using an independent, global research agency called FiftyFive5.

In this 10-minute session, Head of Marketing will present the findings from the latest consumer research which answers the question – just how effective were the commercials in driving trust and future consideration of travel agents.

The presentation will also provide an overview of new marketing initiatives and how you can get involved. After all, consumers are 85% more likely to book with you if they know that you’re an ATAS accredited business.

Public Policy & Advocacy – How is AFTA representing you?

Presenter: Courtney Duddleston, Head of Strategy and Finance

Join this session and hear about the matters that will impact your business and its operations. Courtney, Head of Strategy and Finance will share with you the latest changes to government policies and reforms that you need to know!

What will be covered;

  • The Hayne Royal Commission – an update on Treasury’s reforms on the sale of Add-On Insurance (AOI) and removal of Point of Sale (POS) exemption.
  • An update on The Currency (Restrictions on the Use of Cash) Bill 2019, and what changes you will need to make in your business.
  • NSW Better Business Reforms – what do you need to do to be compliant?
  • Bushfire Recovery – what is our industry doing to help?

Travel Education and Training in Australia

Presenter: Melinda Larkin, Head of AFTA Education and Training

In November last year, AFTA welcomed Melinda Larkin, as an important member of the AFTA management team to help lead and drive education and training outcomes for the travel industry on a national basis.

Melinda Larkin joined AFTA with an impeccable background in the Skills, Workforce, Education and Careers development environment having had a distinguished career herself in a range of roles, including with Family Business Australia, Service Skills Australian, Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) and the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).

Melinda will present and provide insights on workforce and skills development initiatives for the travel industry:

  • Status on Nationally Recognised Travel Qualifications including; an update of the Certificate III in Travel and development of a new qualification for supervisory/leadership positions – Certificate IV in Travel.
  • The value of on-job Traineeships – what’s in it for you including employer incentives.
  • Industry tailored, short course training (skills sets); upskilling, reskilling and best practice business priorities i.e. succession planning.
  • VET in Secondary Schools initiatives/career pathways: rebuilding and rebranding of career opportunities to attract young people into the travel industry;

This session will also provide the opportunity for members to engage in an open discussion and provide valuable feedback.
