About this event

Advanced Weaving Workshop 2: Weaving on a branch/driftwood!

Join teacher Sarah Dally from pickles goes to market for a stimulating and enjoyable afternoon, furthering the skills learned in the beginners and hoop weaving classes, by learning to create a more complex design on a branch! Discover the satisfaction of not only adding to your weaving skill-set - but also learning the Principles and Elements of Design! This knowledge and skill is imperative for any artist. So, they will not only help you create a stunning design - suitable to your particular branch - but also empower you in all future creative endeavours! All this whilst also reducing your impact on the environment.

Time: 1.45pm – 4.45pm

Location: The Nest Community, The Sheds, 264 South Pine Road, Brendale, QLD 4500

During this in-person event, your experienced instructor will guide you through the basics of the stiches and techniques used to transform a branch/driftwood and string into a fabulous contemporary wall hanging. You will leave with either a complete, or a great start to a piece you have designed yourself!

This workshop is designed to cater to intermediate levels, building on the skills learned in the beginner workshop (and possibly also the circular weaving workshop). This means this workshop is not suitable for beginners. Everyone will leave with the skills and confidence to create many more new branch/driftwood pieces at home, with further inspiration to advance to even more challenging designs.

By attending this event, you'll not only learn a new way to weave, but also be able to continue lowering your carbon footprint at home: don’t buy an expensive (or plastic) loom: use a completely natural branch! Say goodbye to those scrappy remnant yarn balls, learn to upcycle fabric (other materials) into yarn and say hello to a more sustainable future!

Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to learn these new skills, meet like-minded individuals, and make a positive impact on the environment. Secure your spot now!

What you will learn:

· Learn how to treat, re-shape, stabilise and warp up a branch

· In-depth teaching of the ‘principles and elements of design’, and how to use them; so you can design a piece specifically for your particular branch

How to work with - instead of against - a natural (asymmetrical) loom

· Use of and incorporate new weaving materials, including upcycling fabric as yarn

· 4 ways to change yarn mid-row

· How to ‘split’ and ‘un-split’ warps

· Add 4 new techniques to your knowledge library (knotted stitch, blocks, triangles and voids)

(Also see the other follow up weaving class available 'Advanced Weaving Workshop 1: Circular Weaving (using an embroidery hoop)'.

Of these two advanced classes, this (branches) is the more challenging.

Whilst you must have a basic weaving knowledge foundation to attend this class, it isn't compulsory to have also completed the circular weaving class before this one.

What is provided:

- 3hrs expert tutelage, in a small group of only 8.

- A beautiful and safe space, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, for you to enjoy the afternoon, and connect with like minded women.

- A HUGE selection of yarn / all materials (including wool rovings!) needed for the project.

- A small pre-treated branch. You will have the option to upsize on the day. Unfortunately, due to health & safety issues, you are not able to BYO branch for this one.

- Sustainable handheld, hardware, and floristry tools.

- An instruction booklet - including a paste in to add to your ‘stitch library’ section.

An extra large bodkin for you to keep.

- Tea and coffee.

What you need to bring:

- your tapestry needle (from the Beginners class) and bodkin from Circular class (if you have).

- your instruction booklet from the Beginners class.

- your own pair of fabric scissors.

- Some cash. This is if you wish to upsize your branch on the day. Note well that the small branch included is very small.

There will be a mixture of pre-treated driftwood and branches in different shapes and sizes available on the day for purchase if you wish to upgrade. These will range from +$10. You must indicate your intention to upgrade PRIOR however. This is so I can have enough pre-treated and ready for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own branch/driftwood?

Unfortunately, no. Due to health & safety issues, you are not able to BYO branch for this one. Not all are suitable for this project, and they need to be pre-treated with a specific product. You will learn about this in the workshop, so you can do more of your own at home.

What if I want to upgrade from the very small branch included?

You MUST indicate your intention prior, at time of booking. As part of the booking process, you will be asked/can indicate there. This is so I can have enough pre-treated upgraded size pieces available on the day. You will also need to bring cash for this option, larger pieces avail from +$10.

Do I need to have completed the Circular Weaving class before doing this one?

Whilst you MUST have a basic weaving knowledge foundation to attend this class, it isn't compulsory to have also completed the circular weaving class before this one. Of these two advanced classes, this (branches) is the more challenging.

Is this a workshop Vegan suitable?

Unfortunately, no. Whilst (as a vegan) you many choose to participate, and not use the Merino wool rovings (or other wool blended yarns); the branches used are all also pre-treated for wood-borers.

My name is Sarah, I am an award winning artist, passionate about textile craft & sustainability. I sell some upcycled clothing pieces - mostly via The Reverse Emporium (at Reverse Garbage in Brisbane). I also love my work helping others find their joy by teaching creative workshops. Currently I offer Rag Rug and Coil Basket Making, however, I have taught a vast range of skills over the past 8 years (both in formal and casual education settings). I always have new ideas/skills/projects on the boil - and am a MacGyver of clothing design/alterations - so well worth following on socials!
