About this event

  • 3 hours

For adult riders who are confident riding on shared paths and wish to start riding on the road.
You will gain bike riding skills and knowledge to ride on roads with confidence so you can use your bike for transport. Bike handling skill development is minimal, with more time spent discussing road and traffic safety and route planning.

Maximum practical experience on the road which includes an on-road ride together as a group in light traffic streets with two instructors - one at the front and one at the rear.

At the end of the course, we intend that participants leave feeling they have the knowledge and confidence to ride on quiet streets on their own.

Limited to 7 spots only.

What will be covered:

  • Clothing, helmet and ABCD bike safety checks: the essential safety checks before every ride.
  • Warm up and bike fit: assess current rider ability and bike setup, adjust as required.
  • Brief recap and assessment of bike handling skills: mount and dismount, start and stop, braking, riding in a straight line, cornering, use of gears, and emergency stopping.
  • Communication techniques: signalling, scanning, using eye contact.
  • Traffic skills: positioning, merging in traffic lane, mock intersections – hook turn and roundabouts.
  • Traffic skills & route planning discussion: shared paths and bike lanes, dooring, tram tracks, other obstacles, road rules. Selecting appropriate travel paths and how to mitigate risk by indentifying and avoiding areas of higher risk.
  • On-road component: 2 hour on-road ride in light traffic, including stops to discuss scenarios such as roundabouts, stop signs, hook turns, bike lanes, and tram lines (where available).
  • Time for questions and feedback surveys completed.
