Accidental Counsellor – Adult Workshop

Accidental Counsellor is a 1-day workshop that supports those who often find themselves offering emotional support, such as educators, healthcare professionals, and support workers. The training builds confidence, practical skills, healthy boundaries, and self-care practices. Participants receive a workbook on the day.

Session 1:

  1. What is / isn't counselling?
  2. Personal characteristics of an Accidental Counsellor
  3. What effects our responses to others?
  4. Why we feel the way we do?
  5. Definitions of strong emotions
  6. Not taking things personally
  7. Different communication styles
  8. Overview of listening skills
  9. Understanding crisis

Session 2:

  1. Communication barriers, process and rules
  2. Acknowledgment
  3. Silence
  4. Conflict
  5. Summarising
  6. Reframing
  7. Stress, anxiety, well-being, suicide awareness
  8. Healthy boundaries, co-dependency, self-righting
  9. Self-care, mindfulness
