Event description

Description

The ACAP Alumni Team is pleased to announce our next professional development session in Brisbane and via zoom on;

An Introduction to Play Therapy - w/ Kylie Ellison

Non-directive child centred play therapy (CCPT) is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of children. Therapists strategically use play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. In play therapy, toys are like the child’s words and play is the child’s language.

This presentation will be delivered by Kylie Ellison - founder of the Centre for Play Therapy, President of the Play Therapy Practitioners Association, counsellor and ACAP Alumni with 12 years of experience working with children, young people and families in the human services field.

Kylie will cover several topics including:

What is Child Centred Play Therapy (CCPT)?

  • Core principles of the approach
  • Empirical evidence and objectives of CCPT
  • Versions of a play therapy room

What is trauma?

  • Definition of trauma
  • How does it present in children- stress response, conscious vs unconscious mind

What are the benefits of Child Centred Play Therapy with traumatized children

  • Interplay between CCPT and trauma
  • Experiences of trauma in the play room
