Capital Health Network, through the National Indigenous Australian’s Health Programme, invites all community based primary healthcare providers in the ACT and surrounding areas and their staff to participate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness Training
About this training
Historical and ongoing trauma and injustices shape the health of Aboriginal and Torres Staright Islander people today. Institutional and implicit racism effects the interactions between Aborginial and Torres Straight Islander peoples and the health system. GPs need to understand the context in which Aborginial and Torres Sraight Islander peoples engage with the healthcare system and the unqiue factors which determine their acute and chronic physical and mental health outcomes.
This training has been designed to meet Culturally Safe Practice CPD, and PIP IHI program requirements.It has been approved for 2 Educational Activity (EA) and 2.5 Reviewing Performance (RP) CPD hours with the RACGP (including pre and post work).
At the end of the session participants will able to:
- Describe and compare the differences between cultural awareness and cultural safety
- Apply knowledge and understanding of culture and the impacts of historical events when caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
- Implement changes in practice to improve cultural safety and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
- Assess their own level of cultural competence and identify further learning needs and opportunities
