Pink House/Green House
Join AAA when we open the Pink House | Green House by Sydney Architect Nick Bell who has transformed a narrow Heritage Terrace into a model for Inner-City Living.
Nick Bell Architecture has transformed a dilapidated 1860s Surry Hills terrace into a light-filled, resilient family home - where design intelligence, not floor area, is key to urban living.
This is Architect Nick Bell's own home , affectionately titled Pink House | Green House. The project is a case study in what considered design can achieve on a constrained inner-city site - and a demonstration of the same philosophy Bell brings to his clients.
The terrace, part of a conservation row in the heart of Sydney, measures just 3.8 metres at its frontage and sits on 91 square metres of land. Before work began, it was dark, claustrophobic, and had been unsympathetically altered over decades. Today, it delivers 120 square metres of thoughtfully resolved internal floor area for Bell and his two adult daughters - a home that flexes between quiet retreat and vibrant family hub.
Old and New in Dialogue rather than treating the heritage conservation requirements as a constraint, Bell made the original facade a central design move. Restored with ashlar render, pink was selected as a nod to the original 1865 City of Sydney site map and colourful terraces that brighten the neighbourhood. It reads as a deliberate counterpoint to the lush greenery of the north-facing rear exterior - giving the project its name and its character. Bell maintains the historic narrative with the interior front wall painted pink, but as you step through the front door you enter an interior where a limited material palette and clean lines invite the eye to rest and the sense of space to expand.
You won't want to miss seeing this amazing transformation of an Inner City residence, so book now.
