A Rock & Roll Writers Festival - Tour Edition
Sun, April 9, 2017, 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM AEST
A Rock & Roll Writers Festival brings a one-day special event to Melbourne. Australia’s only literary festival celebrating the creative relationship between writing and music, the Rock & Roll Writers Festival will bring more than 15 musicians, novelists, commentators and journalists to the Abbotsford Convent on Sunday 9 April, marking the first time the festival has toured from its home base of Brisbane.
The festival offers four panel sessions throughout the day, discussing the creative process for writing music, and for writing about music. Topics include the impact of place, identity, desire and fear on the songwriting process, sharing unique perspectives from performers, as well as those writing and working behind the scenes.
Our guests include singer-songwriters Cash Savage, Mike Noga and Jess Ribeiro, who will delve into the motivations and madness of songwriting.
Internationally-acclaimed producer, performer, writer and former Bad Seeds musician, Hugo Race, will join The Black Eyed Susans front man and author, Rob Snarski, and Cherry Bomb author and journalist Jenny Valentish for a discussion on the meaning, intention and reliability of memoir.
Bunna Lawrie, lead singer and songwriter of Indigenous band Coloured Stone, joins journalist and author Andrew Stafford and musician Mick Thomas to discuss the impact of place and identity on writing and the creative process.
Award-winning journalist and author Andrew McMillen (Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs), will join fellow music critics Michael Dwyer, Kate Hennessy and Mikey Cahill for an in conversation session on reviewing music as an art form, an experience and as a context for the times.
Panel moderators include author Nicole Hayes (The Whole of My World), and host of Triple J’s Australian music show Home & Hosed, Dom Alessio.
