A Framework for Navigating Ongoing Client Suicide Concerns

A framework makes a hard problem workable. Mental health clinicians support clients whose suicide risk rises and falls over months and years. In this alumni event, Prof. Pisani, joined by ACAP Senior Lecturer, Dr Johnny Pullman, presents Prevention-Oriented Risk Formulation, an approach that places risk in the context of the setting and life history in which it occurs. The framework gives clinicians, clients, and teams shared language for describing risk that endures, so they can choose actions suited to the person in front of them. It also names what to do when risk shifts–a defined set of best-practice actions–so practitioners know they have given their best, without the lingering "did I do enough?"

About Professor Anthony R. Pisani, Ph.D., ABPP

Prof. Tony Pisani has spent his career preventing suicide and promoting wellbeing. He combines research at the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the University of Rochester with implementation through SafeSide Prevention (safesideprevention.com), which he founded. He has written more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and hosts the Never the Same podcast. His work spans research, education, and practice across healthcare, military, and community settings in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. One theme runs through all of it: the power of social connection and mutual support, and the capacity of every person to give as well as receive.
