ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER

Mrs Kathryn (Kate) Worden MLA

Elected Member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly (Member for Sanderson)

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence

Minister for Renewables and Energy

Minister for Essential Services

Minister for Sport

Born in England, Kate Worden's initial childhood years were spent in her home country before she relocated to Australia in 1981. Kate attended school in Adelaide, South Australia, before moving to the Northern Territory in 1985. Residing in the remote town of Ngukurr within the Roper Gulf Region, a stark contrast to the city environment that she wholeheartedly embraced.

Then spending time between Adelaide and the Northern Territory, faced with the responsibilities of single motherhood at 22, Kate completed a Bachelor degree in Indigenous Affairs in South Australia. The pursuit of her degree was profoundly shaped by her experiences in Ngukurr, Arnhem Land and Katherine.

In 1995, Kate made the decision to return to the Territory with her daughters, aiming to provide them with an opportunity reconnect with their cultural identity through re-establishing relationships to family and country.

Joining the Northern Territory Government the same year, she gained a wealth of experience and knowledge in many departments including Mines, Education, Health, Housing and Consumer Affairs. Kate also garnered valuable firsthand experienced working at the highest level of Government, for Minister Jak Ah Kit and the former Chief Minister Paul Henderson.

Kate has been a long term member of the NT Labor Party and in 2012 was elected to the City of Darwin Council where she served for almost four years as an Alderman for the Chan Ward. Her passion to serve the community soon drove her to contest the seat of Sanderson in the Northern Suburbs and in August of 2016, Kate was elected as the representative for Sanderson.

Kate entered the Northern Territory Cabinet under Chief Minister Michael Gunner, becoming the Minister for Territory Families, Minister for Sport, Minister for Disabilities, Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Minister for Urban Housing.

Recognising the prevalence of domestic, family and sexual violence within the Northern Territory, Kate initiated the establishment of the dedicated Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence portfolio under Chief Minister Gunner in April 2022.

In late 2023, Kate gained the portfolios of Environment, Climate Change and Water Security; Energy and Renewables; and Essential Services, while retaining her role as Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence and Minister for Sport. She is passionate about the instrumental role these portfolios will play in achieving the Government’s targets of a $40 billion economy by 2030; 50% renewables by 2030; and net zero emissions by 2050. Kate is driven by the belief that development of our energy and renewables sectors will be key to growing the sustainable and responsible own-source revenue the Territory needs to deliver the critical services all Territorians deserve.
