Question 1

How different is a vision screening session to an optometrist visit?

Accepted Answer

While the optometrist examination is more comprehensive, the optometrist is focused at sharpening eyesight and prescribing necessary glasses. An orthoptist-led vision screening focuses on screening for muscle imbalances, poor eye teaming, eye turn or lazy eyes for management via vision therapy.

Question 2

What is an Orthoptist

Accepted Answer

An orthoptist is a health professional who specializes in the diagnosis and management of eye movement disorders and vision problems. They work closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists to assess, diagnose, and provide non-surgical treatment for various eye conditions, including strabismus.

Question 3

My child has been prescribed glasses but doesn't wear them, should I bring them?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely, glasses provide the individual with the sharpest possible vision. Tests examined without the correct glasses may make the test results unreliable.

Question 4

What should I bring with me?

Accepted Answer

To gain the most out of this opportunity, bring along a list of common signs, symptoms, or visual problems you have noticed or your child has expressed. Don't forget to curate a list of questions! If your child has already been diagnosed with an eye problem, bringing a summary is helpful.

Question 5

What happens if a problem is detected during the vision screening session?

Accepted Answer

All children will receive a quick summary. However, if a potential issue is found during the session, the orthoptist will typically recommend a follow-up appointment for a comprehensive examination and further testing.
