Fearless Curious: is the media out of touch?

Are you part of a quiet majority who worry that our public discourse is broken? Warring tweets, snarky headlines, name calling and de-friending are all the rage in an age of outrage. But they hardly help with the challenges faced by a society of many diverse backgrounds and opinions.News coverage, panel events, politically outspoken workplaces and educational institutions often amplify such anger, while disdaining or even excluding different perspectives. So where can people be fearless and curious in exploring our often conflicting ideas about gender, race and sexuality? And connect with the many Australians who have quietly longed for the same?Fearless Curious is an interactive event series based in Sydney where audiences and panellists explore controversies about gender, race and sexuality with respect and nuance.

Fearless Curious

It seems a lot of people are unhappy with our news media these days. Some believe our newsrooms lack cultural and ethnic diversity, leading to narrow or inaccurate coverage. Others believe journalism lacks diversity of opinion, with our biggest news brands often one-sided on contentious issues of the day.  How fair are these criticisms? Are people right to turn away from mainstream media? Are the alternatives any better? What can we do to make this influential cultural institution more reflective of society's diverse opinions?
This month, Fearless Curious welcomes journalist Marc Fennell in conversation with host Ky Chow.

Who's the special guest this month?
Marc Fennell is a ridiculously prolific Australian interviewer, journalist, documentary maker, TV, podcast and radio host and author. He hosts SBS's current affairs programme 'The Feed', presents the media and tech series 'Download This Show' for ABC Audio and has also worked with The BBC, Telstra, Showtime, Network Ten, ABC TV, Foxtel and Monocle. In a previous life Marc was a record label art director and - oh so briefly - a hand model. He's also a founding executive member of Media Diversity Australia.
How does Q&A at this event work?
Submit your questions before and during the event using the free service <A HREF="https://www.sli.do/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sli.do</A> (event code to be supplied with ticket receipt). Our crew will pick some the strongest questions to put to our panel either anonymously - or ideally, from you in person. 
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from Fearless Curious?
The St James Hotel is splat in the middle of Sydney, near the corner of Castlereagh and Market street near David Jones. That's easy walking distance from most CBD offices and train stations including Town Hall and St James. 
Do I get fed for $30?
Yes, and watered! We'll have a huge spread of fish and chips, butter chicken, risotto, sliders and more - plus two free drinks (beer, wine, soft drinks). 
 
Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
If you can't make it and have a friend who can, they'll need to register in their own name for venue security requirements. 
Will Fearless Curious be recorded?
The panel discussion and Q&A will be recorded and made available via Ky Chow's really quite excellent <A HREF="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-other-hand/id1458213903" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">On the Other Hand podcast</A>.
