Dr Joab Wilson from Ecology and Restoration Australia will be running a birdwatching session. After an introduction to the ecology of Gunbower Forest, we will aim to conduct two 20-minute surveys in contrasting parts of the forest.

Participants will have the chance to assist by identifying birds by sight or sound and record them in iNaturalist.

Dr Joab Wilson has over 20 years’ experience as both a practitioner and researcher in the environmental conservation industry. He has worked in a diversity of Australian ecosystems, ranging from semi-arid mallee to temperate environments.

In 2013, Joab completed a PhD investigating arid zone bird communities and their relationship with habitat and resources in modified mallee landscapes.

Where to meet

Participants will meet at Spence's Bridge (800m along Spences Bridge Rd) for a safety briefing before driving out to the survey site in the Forest.

What to bring

It is recommended that participants bring a long a smart device with iNaturalist already downloaded as reception in Gunbower Forest is not reliable. A waterbottle and clothes suitable for working outdoors (e.g. long pants) is recommended. Closed-toed shoes will be compulsory for participants.
