The Disability Studies Seminar series is hosted by the Centre for Disability Research and Policy at the University of Sydney and the Centre for Disability Studies. Each month we are honored to invite prominent researchers and associates to present.

This seminar is run monthly as a joint initiative of the <a href="https://cds.org.au/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Disability Studies </a>and the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/our-research/research-centres/centre-for-disability-research-and-policy.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Disability Research and Policy</a>, University of Sydney. On Thursday 14th of September 1:00-2:00pm, we welcome Lou Mitchell, who will deliver a presentation titled “What was it like to do community recovery work after the 2019/2020 Bushfires in a highly impacted rural area?” A﻿bstract:This presentation describes how the work of community recovery was experienced after the 2019/2020 bushfires. In February 2020, after multiple evacuation orders, due to threat that extended for weeks prior, a 65% of the Bega Valley Shire area was burnt and 460 houses destroyed. The psychosocial consequences were predicted to be deep and long. For community recovery workers there were exponential demands and amidst this they had to come to terms with sitting with the many uncertainties in the turbulence after the fires. The work was also experienced as slow, careful and meaningful, with high levels of personal investment reported. The community worker experience revealed tensions, both relational and systemic.
