Join us for an introduction to the works of Studio Revolt collaborative media lab, comprising artist Anida Yoeu Ali and filmmaker Masahiro Sugano. As part of their Asia-Pacific creative research stopover in Melbourne, Studio Revolt will present and discuss a series of their interdisciplinary and cinematic collaborative projects, showcasing works that open up possibilities for people to exist outside of conventional narratives. This includes their work within anti-deportation communities, international collaborations, and specifically their efforts to centre voices from the periphery (Palestine, Botswana, Cambodia, and BIPOC Americans, among others), as well as their most recent research in Malaysia exploring sites of settlement and invasion to address traumatic histories.The close of the session will comprise a discussion with filmmaker Masahiro Sugano and performance artist Anida Yoeu Ali, moderated by Senior Lecturer in Art History and Theory, Michelle Antoinette.Speakers Studio Revolt is a collaborative media lab that produces films, videos, installations, and performance projects by artist Anida Yoeu Ali and filmmaker Masahiro Sugano. Based in Cambodia from 2011–2015, they became a prominent presence in the contemporary arts scene showcasing their works in screenings, exhibitions, and public art projects all over Asia. Their works have been exhibited in biennales including APT8, Gwangju, and Jogja; screened in notable festivals like Shanghai International, Balinale, and Lebanon International; and won numerous awards including LinkTV’s grand prize for the film 1700% Project: Mistaken for Muslim, Center for Asian American Media’s Innovation Fund, 2015 Sovereign Asian Art Prize (Hong Kong), 2020 Art Matters Grant, and 2018 Tacoma Arts Commission Grants. From The Buddhist Bug series to video works on deportations, they are interested in centring peripheral voices and issues of displacement. Currently both Ali and Sugano serve as Senior Artists-in-Residence at the University of Washington Bothell, where they teach art and media, influencing a new generation of creative thinkers and agitators. At the heart of what they do as teachers and artists is a desire to defy boundaries and take creative risks.
