We are very excited for this one!
Join us at Mt Pleasant Radio Telescope Observatory for exclusive access to this iconic fixture on the Coal River Valley skyline.
We will hear from Dark Sky Tasmaniawho aspire for Tasmania to be recognised globally as a leader in conservation and awareness of dark skies. They plan to achieve this through the preservation and protection of Tasmania's existing night sky assets, and to educate and influence change to public policy for compliant outdoor lighting across new and existing infrastructure.
Dark sky tourism, or 'astro-tourism' is a rapidly growing area of eco-tourism. Dark sky experiences are sustainable, requiring minimal infrastructure development and little environmental disruption. They also have a direct positive impact on local economies, as they encourage overnight stays in regional areas.
Aligning with a key pillar of DST's Destination Management Plan, the establishment of a dark sky sanctuary further promotes access to Tasmania's natural wilderness and cultural heritage.
A welcome drink and nibbles will be provided, with further beverage purchases available by card only.
