Title: Darkness Visible Down UnderDecades of research have led astronomers to a staggering conclusion, that there exists a new, invisible type of mass that outweighs everything we can see five times over. I will explain how we know so much about a substance we have yet to actually find, and how Australia is playing a leading role in uncovering the nature of this mysterious dark matter with SABRE, the world’s first dark matter detector in the Southern Hemisphere in the Stawell gold mine.Speaker: Professor Alan DuffyProfessor Alan Duffy is the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Flagship Initiatives at Swinburne University of Technology, bringing together diverse research teams with industry and government stakeholders to undertake transformative programs in Flagship sectors of hydrogen, renewable technologies, AI, space and aerospace, MedTech and health innovation. Alan’s research background is simulating baby universes on supercomputers to understand how galaxies like our Milky Way form within vast clouds of dark matter. He is trying to find this dark matter as a Chief Investigator in the $35M ARC CoE for Dark Matter Particle Physics and SABRE, the world’s first dark matter detector in the Southern Hemisphere, at the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory at the bottom of an active gold mine in Victoria. The National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Trip is bringing all things quantum and dark matter to communities around Australia as part of National Science Week. A team of scientists and science communicators will be visiting schools, libraries, pubs and other community hubs from 7 to 25 August, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and highlight the potential of quantum technologies and dark matter discovery for the future of our society. We are very grateful to Swinburne University of Technology and the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing for their support of this event.
