Popran National Park

Our journey starts from Popran up to Mount Olive with views over flat topped Mt Yengo in the distance. Find out about the Donovans of Donovan's Forest and the strange stories of bigamy and 'horse whispering' in the early days of Mangrove Creek. Our tour descends towards Ironbark Creek where the post office once served the scattered and outlying communities of the ridges and valleys. We travel along the mailman bridle track with out expert guides passing through 'the eye of the needle' amidst spectacular sandstone country and heathland

We climb Mount Olive for expansive views to the surrounding countryside and orientation towards Mount Yengo. It is believed that Popran National Park was a travel route used by both inland and coastal Aboriginal groups crossing the area. Physical evidence of this long standing culture can be seen in tessellated platform engravings along the track.

Spectacular sandstone cliffs, caves and overhangs. Enjoy learning more about the surrounding flora and fauna including the rare Grevillea Diffusa and basalt volcanic intrusions.

Hear stories about life for the creek dwellers in the 19th and 20th centuries - from runaways, squatters, and itinerant timber getters to currency lads and lasses and multi-generational farmers.

Views to Mt Boyne and the Ironbark Creek valley floor. Reimagine the mailman heading this way from the Ironbark Creek post office to Mt Olive and then onto Popran Valley. Tracing the hidden paths we hear stories of how news from afar was delivered to the homes scattered across the ridges and valleys of this remote area.

Agenda

Exploring the Mailman Track (Mt Olive & Ironbark) is around 10kms and is classified as medium/hard. The route traverses uneven and loose ground with some scrambling and may be slippery. Good bush walking shoes/boots and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
