ARTIST TALK | It Was a Difficult Conversation

Stanley Street Gallery directors Merilyn Bailey and Liza Feeney attended Sydney College of the Arts together from 1980 to 1986 completing a BA and Grad dip in Visual Arts.The gallery opened in October 2012 and is a beautiful space in the heart of the city with a reputation for showing a unique a diverse range of artworks, mediums and artists, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and contemporary jewellery. Our focus is not on the materials used but on the ideas and concepts being explored by the artists.

THIS SATURDAY | ARTIST TALKTONI MESSITER It Was a Difficult ConversationSaturday June 24, 202312 PM In her latest exhibition, Toni Messiter moves away from her typical subject matter to turn toward the environment. Interested in notions of haunting, the subjectivity of nature and the shadows of the trees are considered by the artist.She writes, “I left the foreground to move into the background” @tonimessiter Unlike conventional landscape where the environment is a scene for the human, in this series the artist has positioned the tree, beings who have memory and sensation - as protagonist. With a distinct gothic framework, the tree as protagonist is a clear continuation of the artist’s previous investigations of the subconscious and shadow.
