Please join us for a talk with author and artist, Jo Oliver on her recent publication - Adelaide Perry: artist &amp; teacher.Adelaide Perry was part of the Modernist art movement in Australia and one of the innovative women printmakers between the wars. This biography explores her life and work in an engaging narrative over a period when the lives of women changed radically. The book includes colour and black and white plates of Adelaide’s paintings and prints.Adelaide studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and won the travelling scholarship in 1920 to study at the Royal Academy of Art in London. She drew, painted and exhibited her work all her life. She taught firstly at Julian Aston’s Sydney School of Art before establishing the Adelaide Perry School of Drawing and Painting where she mentored a number of significant Australian artists. Adelaide taught at the girls’ school, Presbyterian Ladies’ College Sydney for over thirty years and positively influenced many young women.The Adelaide Perry Gallery has been named in her honour and holds the prestigious Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing each year continuing the legacy of this remarkable Australian woman artist and teacher.Jo Oliver is a writer and printmaker. She received a Creative Fellowship from the State Library of Victoria in 2013, her research leading to, Jessie Traill: a biography, published by Australian Scholarly Publishing in 2020. Jo was shortlisted for the Hazel Rowley Fellowship in 2021 to research the life and work of Adelaide Perry. She was previously author and illustrator of four children’s picture books, using printmaking techniques for the illustrations, published by New Frontier. Her love of prints was her first connection with the work of Adelaide Perry and Jessie Traill.Jo was invited to contribute to the National Gallery of Australia’s 2021 book, Know My Name and is pleased to help bring the lives of Australian women artists to the public eye.Copies of the publication will be available for purchase and signing on the night for RRP $49.95https://scholarly.info/book/adelaide-perry/ Friends of the Drill Hall Gallery is kindly supported by Clonakilla Wines and 1980 Chinese Restaurant.
