<h3>Following the launch of the Australian Music Centre’s First Nations Cultural Policy for Represented Artists, join us for this special Surrounding Sound event to explore why this document is an essential safeguard for Australian First Nations cultural intellectual property in music. </h3><p>Learn about Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP), what it does and doesn’t protect, and how to implement the AMC First Nations Cultural Policy for Represented Artists for your own musical practice. </p><p></p><p>This session will be beneficial for creators, performers, and educators to learn best practices when working with First Nations cultural intellectual property, including musical material and text. </p><p>This online event will be hosted by Catherine Haridy (AMC, CEO) and Meeghan Oliver (AMC, Librarian and ATSI Lead), with special guest speakers, Dharug composer Dr Christopher Sainsbury (Australian National University, Associate Professor in Composition) and Patricia Adjei (Australia Council for the Arts, Head of First Nations Arts and Culture).</p><p></p><h2>About our guest speakers</h2><h3>Dr Christopher Sainsbury </h3><p>As a composer Dr Chris Sainsbury is passionately interested in the interpretation of his home region of the Central Coast of NSW and Sydney through works. His PhD focus was on working as a regionalist composer, which is about reinterpreting and reconstituting the motives and images of one’s region in new works that fortify a sense of regional identity. It&#x27;s important to Chris on many levels, and in part is informed by his Indigenous (Dharug) heritage. </p><p>He is Associate Professor in Composition at the Australian National University (ANU). Previously he was Head of Department in Aboriginal Visual and Performing Arts at the Eora Centre, an Indigenous Tertiary College in Sydney for 23 years, and an extension of that work is now via the Ngarra-Burria First Peoples Composers program. He also plays a part as a composer mentor for young Australian composers with Artology.</p><p>He has received national and international awards for effecting change within the classical and new music industry, including the APRA National Luminary Award and a Classical:NEXT Innovation Award given for leadership of the Ngarra-Burria First Peoples Composers program. Since the mid-1980s he has made a sustained contribution to Australian music through composing, teaching, advocating for the commissioning and programming of First Nations composers and also advocating for the programming of all Australian composers.</p><p></p><h3>Patricia Adjei </h3><p>Patricia is a Wuthathi, Mabuiag Islander and Ghanaian woman from Sydney and strong advocate and writer. She has a Bachelor of Arts and Law from UNSW and is the Head of First Nations arts and culture at the Australia Council for the Arts. Patricia previously was the Indigenous engagement manager at the Copyright Agency l Viscopy. She is the 2022 UNSW Alumni award recipient for her contribution to art and culture.

</p><p>She was the 2018 Churchill fellowship recipient, investigating the practical application of laws in the USA and Panama that protect Indigenous cultural rights. Patricia has served on several arts and Indigenous advisory boards and has worked across legal organisations like WIPO, the Arts Law Centre of Australia and National Indigenous television.
