Connection to Country – Setting the scene • Presentation Aboriginal People lives prior to first contact• Who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People? - Kinship Systems &amp; Lore - Bush Tucker – Healthy &amp; StrongContact History • First Contact - Massacres and Poisonings - 1780-1920- Introduction of Disease- Genocide Group Activity, Aboriginal Australia Map • Government Policies - Overview of government policies that caused the displacement and disempowerment of Aboriginal people- Aborigines Protection Act – 1915 amendment to the 1909 Act. Allowing for the removal of Aboriginal children at any time for any reason - Establishment of missions • Closing the Gap - History and current status- Targets and recent reforms - Shared responsibility • Recognition &amp; Empowerment - Freedom Rides 1965 (includes short video clip) - 1967 Referendum - NAIDOC yearly event to celebrate Aboriginal culture – themes of focus • Bark Painting Workshop - Create your own original painting on bark - Natural fibres, bark from stringy bark tree, ochres and grinding stone - Learning the cultural significance of artwork – the critical importance for Aboriginal people to keep our stories strong and how everything connects
