You are invited to join us for a special evening in which Nicci Haynes, Richard Johnson and Rhys Butler will respond with drawing and sound in the Tony Tuckson exhibition.For Nicci Haynes, live-drawing at events in collaboration with assorted dancers, musicians and poets has become a significant component of her practice, events where experimental languages spontaneously emerge between dance, music/sound, image/projection. Acts of instantaneous composition and inventive improvisations lead to journeys of wild immersion.Invention on-the-go is the common element throughout Nicci’s diverse art practice, which includes print, drawing, and mad-scientist installations. Experimental film and animation frequently serve as vehicles for capturing liveness and movement: the serial nature of film processes allowing elements of a diverse practice to be integrated within a single container.Nicci lives and works on unceded country of Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri peoples. For more info click hereRichard Johnson is a sound artist and musician dedicated to sound improvisation. He is the Director, Curator, Producer and Administrator at SoundOut festivals. As a sound artist he worked with renowned visual artist Savanhdary Vongpoothorn for the Australia Exhibition at The Casula Power House as well collaborated with conceptual-visual artist Denise Higgins on soundscapes. In 2021 he created a soundscape response for the Drill Hall exhibition Out of Place curated by Oscar Capezio.Richard describes the cross over between visual art and sound by paraphrasing Art Hisotorian Meyer Shaprio in 1957 when discussing Avant grade Art:"The consciousness of the personal and spontaneous in the {Free Improvisational Music} painting and sculpture stimulates the artist to invent devices of handling, processing, surfacing, which confer to the utmost degree the aspect of the freely made. Hence the great importance of the mark, the stroke, the brush {the instrument of sound production}, the drip, the quality of the substance of the paint {sound} itself, and the surface of the canvas {AIR the waves of auditory phenomena} as a texture and field of operation—all signs of the artistʼs active presence”Richard lives and works on unceded country of Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri peoples. To listen to some of Richard's recordings click hereRhys Butler is a saxoponist based in Canberra. He has come to know the cities he has lived in through improvised and noise music. The trio Dinner Sock (Stephen Roach (drums), David Keyton (feedback), and Rhys Butler (saxophones)) formed from the weekly Fugue State Sessions in Guanzhou. The group performed with local experimenters such as Yan Jun, Feng Hao and Li Zenghui and collaborated with musicians transiting China such as Uwe Bastiansen (Faust) and Lucas Abela. Despite living in different corners of the world, Dinner Sock has continued to participate in China's experimental music scene and played Beijing's Sally Can't Dance festival and NOIShanghai in 2012. In Santiago, Chile, Rhys participated in events run by Productura Mutante and played in the free-for-all Collective Improvisation NO. Now residing in Canberra, Rhys has been working in a duo with Reuben Ingall (live processing). More recently he has been part of the Psithurism trio with John Porter and Richard Johnson, which have a new release called Lure out with French clarinetist Xavier Charles.
