Robyn has worked as a secondary teacher for over 20 years, then as a Waste Education Officer for a Regional Council, delivering a message of waste minimisation to local communities and school children, She now runs her own business, Waste Is My Resource.Robyn's concern for waste has been a lifetime passion that started in her childhood in the country where very little was wasted due to isolation and lack of money. Her parents showed her how to re use and build using recycled materials, along with how to grow organic food, which she continues on her property at Serpentine.Robyn has a wonderful knack of making things simple, using what you have at hand, and great tips for troubleshooting on our journeys to become waste savvy.

Did you know that 30- 50 percent of your general waste bin is organic waste and it could be composted on site, avoiding energy loss from transport and emission of dangerous greenhouse gases at landfill facilities?Did you also know that plants and the microbes (that live and breed in compost, have a symbiotic relationship that determines plant health?All that food waste and other organics is far too valuable for our soil to waste it by throwing it away.You can ditch the fertilisers, save your pocket and do your garden a favour by making compost.Join Robyn Brown, from Waste Is My Resource, to learn about composting. She will will show you various forms of composting available for home gardeners such as how to use a compost bin, rotating composter, worm tubes. worm farms, pet composting and bokashi composting (ideal for small units).T﻿his workshop is funded by Waste Sorted and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale. It is part of a lead up to a community Plastic Free July festival at Mundijong on 1 July. If you agree to participate in a trial of collecting organic waste, you will initially receive a bucket composter and a kitchen caddy. You will then be asked to record approximately how much organic waste you collect daily,over a month and return a sheet to show those findings. If you return the data sheet and attend the Plastic Free July event on 1 July, you will then be able to collect your choice of a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi bin.
