About this event

Glen Davis is in the Capertee Valley NSW, Wiradjuri Country.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters, and we show our respect for Elders past, present and emerging.

Capertee Valley is a unique landscape and a designated Important Bird Area sharing borders with the National Parks of Wollemi, Capertee and Gardens of Stone and Mugii Murum-Ban State Conservation Area.

Capertee Valley Landcare, the North East Wiradjuri Co and Central Tablelands Local Land Services have been working together to make Glen Davis Reserve a valued piece of riverside habitat and public enjoyment.

Our work so far has included weed control, tree planting and erosion repair. Thanks to the support of volunteers - including our friends from Greater Sydney Landcare - we can see improvements already, but we have more to do. We invite you to help us with our Autumn restoration event.

Friday 31 March – Arrive and settle into camp

If you are coming from outside the local area we recommend that you arrive on Friday and camp in the Glen Davis Campground on Crown Cres. It has hot showers, flush toilets, picnic tables, and potable water with plenty of shade available. There is also a campsite not too far away in the National Park (Coorongooba - bookings required). If camping is not for you there are other accommodation options in the Valley (but book soon), and you can still join in all the event activities.

Community Update – NSW Fisheries – Capertee River Habitat Assessment Survey You can also join us on Friday afternoon at Glen Davis Hall from 1:30-3:30 for an update from NSW Fisheries on the habitat assessment works being completed on the Capertee River, as well as additional guest speakers. The details for this update and registration is here: https://www.trybooking.com/CGOZW

We will leave you to do your own thing on Friday night.

Saturday 1 April - Get your hands dirty

We'll meet at 9:00am in the Glen Davis Reserve on Canobla Ave, less than a kilometre from the campsite. You can walk, take your car or take your bike there from the campground.

We will acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Wiradjuri people, whose deep connections to the area continue. Then we will team up with Central Tablelands Local Land Services to plant some local species and tackle some of the invasive weeds. We will use any spare time to maintain the plantings we did last year.

Bring your own lunch, snacks and water. We will also have some treats for you.

Saturday night dinner

You're invited to gather for a no-cost dinner in the Glen Davis Community Hall at the campsite. Capertee Valley Landcare will be cooking up dinner and dessert, but we would appreciate it if you could bring along some shareable pre-dinner snacks such as cheeses, olives, nuts, dips. There will be a bit of fridge space in Glen Davis Hall to store perishables.

Sunday 2 April – You have choices

You can come bushwalking with us, which is one of the best ways to appreciate this special part of the world. We are planning a challenging but spectacular bushwalk for volunteers. There will be limited numbers for this so get in quick with your registration. We will provide you with more details of the walk closer to the day.

Or you can do your own thing - relax at camp, do some birdwatching nearby, check out Wollemi National Park, drop into the local cafe From the Paddock or head to the Royal Capertee Hotel on the way home.

We’ll wrap things up on Sunday afternoon but you could always stay on for another night in the Valley.

Registration:

RSVPs are essential so to avoid disappointment please register ASAP!

There's separate registration if you will be attending all day for both planting/weeding and dinner, or if you are coming for planting/weeding only.

After registration, we will contact you with details about the Sunday bushwalking and ask if you are interested.

Your safety: Please be advised you will need a reasonable level of fitness to attend this project. On-site training and tools are provided. Children are welcome but must be supervised by parents as we will be planting and weeding in a riverside setting with some car movements.

What to bring:

  • camping gear (tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, etc.)
  • long sleeved shirt and long pants for Landcare activities
  • sturdy closed toe shoes
  • gardening gloves
  • hat/sunscreen/sunglasses
  • wet weather layer
  • water bottle and 1-2 litres drinking water
  • medications - if you get hayfever please bring your medication to the work site as there are many grasses and plants that could trigger your allergies
  • food for meals and snacks (and something to share at dinner on Saturday night)
  • bushwalking gear - if you plan to come walking with us

Getting there and away

You will need to provide your transportation to the campsite. There is (slow) public transport as far as Capertee village on the Castlereagh Hwy but not to Glen Davis. If you need transport, we’ll try to find a ride for you to share. Let us know.

We recommend arriving before dark on Friday but as long as you arrive by 9:00am on Saturday morning that’ll be fine.

What will the weather be like?

By April the weather should typically be cooling down a bit but not cold. The nights could be chilly and the days temperate but with strong sun. On the other hand it may rain. Come prepared for all weather.

Our last planned big event was flooded out. We don't expect that to happen again. We will be closely monitoring the weather conditions and will update you if necessary. In the event that we can't go ahead on that weekend, please pencil in the weekend of 29-30 April to get those plants in the ground!
