Dykes on Mics Karaoke

UNSW Galleries brings together the work of leading Australian and international practitioners, curators and writers working in the fields of contemporary art and design. It is a space for the presentation and interpretation of contemporary visual and material culture, and a site for gathering, conversation and learning. The program stresses the importance of learning through exhibition-making, using integrated projects and events across the year to engage audiences in conversation with commentators from a range of disciplines.

UNSW Galleries, the National Art School and Sydney WorldPride present 'Eulogy for the Dyke Bar', an installation and public programming series by American artist Macon Reed.

Join us for a night of singing and laughter for Dykes On Mics Karaoke at Eulogy for the Dyke Bar.Led by artist and karaoke enthusiast Salote Tawale, this night will be stocked with all the hottest dyke anthems, from 80s rock ballads, to Dolly Parton, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and more! Whether you&#x27;re a seasoned performer or only sing in the shower, this is a chance to connect with the dyke community in an inclusive and fun atmosphere.Salote Tawale works across performance, moving image, painting and installation to probe ideas of self-representation. Humorously challenging stereotypes, Salote presents nuanced articulations of the complex negotiations around identity as a queer Fijian woman with settler-colonial heritage living in Australia.—Presented by UNSW Galleries, the National Art School and Sydney WorldPride, Eulogy for the Dyke Bar is a sculptural environment and memorial to bygone dyke bars. The installation incorporates a café and operating bar, and functions as an active community space for performances, cruising, socialising, and contemplating the future of queer spaces. This project reclaims the term ‘dyke’ in its most expansive sense and recognises that gender and identities are complex and fluid.
