CAMP Women's Night

UNSW Galleries brings together the work of leading Australian and international practitioners, curators and writers working in the fields of contemporary art and design. It is a space for the presentation and interpretation of contemporary visual and material culture, and a site for gathering, conversation and learning. The program stresses the importance of learning through exhibition-making, using integrated projects and events across the year to engage audiences in conversation with commentators from a range of disciplines.

UNSW Galleries, the National Art School and Sydney WorldPride present 'Eulogy for the Dyke Bar', an installation and public programming series by American artist Macon Reed.

Eulogy for the Dyke Bar recreates the 1970s ‘CAMP Women’s Night’ to honour Sydney’s histories of activism and resistance in an evening of storytelling led by Robyn Kennedy.Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) was a lesbian and gay political organisation founded in 1970. Each Wednesday night, lesbians met at 33A Glebe Point Road to socialise and self-organise.Hear from Robyn as they recount lived experiences from a time of protest and change, including stories from the recently published book CAMP: Australia’s pioneer homosexual rights activists (2022). The evening recreates elements of the CAMP Women’s Nights, complete with ham and cheese toasties and instant coffee. It offers an opportunity to share our histories, and acknowledge the resistance and care that has enabled us to enjoy spaces like the Dyke Bar today.—Presented by UNSW Galleries, the National Art School and Sydney WorldPride, Eulogy for the Dyke Bar is a sculptural environment and memorial to bygone dyke bars. The installation incorporates a café and operating bar, and functions as an active community space for performances, cruising, socialising, and contemplating the future of queer spaces.This project aims to reclaim the term ‘dyke’ in its most expansive sense and recognises that gender and identities are complex and fluid. She has held senior management roles in government and the not-for-profit sectors where she has provided advisory services aimed at addressing social inequity and disadvantage. She is a past Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Board member and past Vice President of InterPride. She is the founder of Oceania Pride and current Board member of Qtopia, the Sydney pride museum. During the 1970s, Robyn was the Secretary of CAMP, the organisation that spearheaded Australia’s LGBTQI+ rights movement. She recently co-authored a book about CAMP and the individuals who fueled the pioneer Pride movement in Australia. Robyn is a recipient of ACON’s prestigious Community Hero Award which recognises outstanding contributions to advancing the rights of LGBTQI + communities. Robyn’s contribution to the community is recorded in the National Library of Australia’s collection of audio oral histories of distinguished Australians. Robyn was InterPride’s Outstanding Volunteer of 2022.
