Fifty Years of Direct Action Queensland

The Civil Liberties "67 Reunion Committee is itself a reunion of people who took part in the Civil Liberties March of 1967 and others who were influenced by this as well as various other political movements that arose following this event. We formed our committee to organise the conference which will reflect on the times, what followed and activism today.

The Civil Liberties '67 Reunion Committee

In 1967, 4000 students marched from The University of Queensland to the city in defiance of a ban on marching. Though this civil liberties march concerned the right to protest, it signalled a new politics, that with growing community support, would influence political movements in Queensland and beyond.
The march strengthened the opposition to Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War and conscription, and was a harbinger of the future mass actions of the moratorium marches and the Springbok demonstrations. It marked a new focus on gender and race equity and participatory forms of democracy.
Fifty years on participants and others invite you to join them, not only to celebrate the anniversary of the civil liberties march but to question and explore its relevance today.
Over three speaker and panel sessions the conference aims:

If you'd like to come on the day for the afternoon sessions, (1pm) it's $10 waged and a gold coin donation unwaged; for the last session (3pm) a gold coin donation.
