Odd Radio Circles: Giant Explosions in Distant Galaxies by Prof. Ray Norris

TheAstronomical Society of South Australiaholds in-person and online meetings each month which are open to the public, regular viewing nights, and circulates current astronomical news and information. Our mission is to observe, understand, share and to enjoy the wonders of the Universe. We promote Astronomy to the public in South Australia to inspire and enrich the astronomer in everyone. Membership starts at $25 per year and is open to anyone with an interest in Astronomy:http://assa.org.au/join

Mysterious gigantic circular emissions unlike anything we know have been discovered around distant galaxies using a new Australian telescope

The Braggs Lecture Theatre, The University of Adelaide

Members of the general public are most welcome to attend this meeting of the Astronomical Society of South Australia (ASSA).Title: Odd Radio Circles: Giant Explosions in Distant GalaxiesSpeaker: Prof. Ray NorrisCSIRO Astronomy & Space Science, and Western Sydney UniversityAbstract: In 2019, within days of getting the first full-quality images from CSIRO's new ASKAP radio telescope in Western Australia, we discovered faint circles of radio emission which were unlike anything seen before. We had no idea what they were, and some people even doubted whether they were real. Three years on, and we've studied them with other telescopes, notably the South African Meerkat telescope, which has given us deep images showing structure that we couldn’t see with ASKAP, and also measurements of their magnetic field. We are now pretty certain that most of them are giant bubbles about a million light years across, driven by shockwaves from a gigantic explosion in the central galaxy. They are so large that they have engulfed nearby galaxies, But what caused the explosions? That is what we are now trying to figure out.More Info: https://theconversation.com/odd-radio-circles-that-baffled-astronomers-are-likely-explosions-from-distant-galaxies-178290Bio: Ray Norris is a Research Professor at Western Sydney University and an Emeritus Fellow at CSIRO Space & Astronomy, who researches how galaxies formed and evolved after the Big Bang, and also researches the astronomy of Aboriginal Australians. He featured in the stage show "The First Astronomers" with Wardaman elder Bill Yidumduma Harney, and has written the novel "Graven Images". He was educated at Cambridge University, and University of Manchester, UK, and moved to Australia to join CSIRO, where he became Head of Astrophysics, and then Deputy Director of the Australia Telescope, and Director of the Australian Astronomy Major National Research Facility, before returning in 2005 to active research. He initiated an international project (EMU, or Evolutionary Map of the Universe) to understand the origin and evolution of galaxies, using the new ASKAP radio-telescope in Western Australia, and led the team within EMU that discovered the mysterious ORCs (or Odd Radio Circled) that are still unexplained. He also studies the astronomy of Indigenous Australians, and is fascinated by their many intellectual achievements as they sought to understand their Universe.More Info: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rnorrisCOVID Safety: Check the ASSA website (assa.org.au/covid) for the latest safety requirements for meetings and other events.Notes:

Tickets are only required to attend in-person.

The presentation will be streamed live and can be watched on YouTube at https://youtube.com/astronomysa.
