Artist talks with Nabilah Nordin and Otis Hope Carey alongside ‘NO FALSE IDOLS’.

Join us at 4A on Sunday 14 August from 12pm to 1pm for an exhibition floor talk featuring NO FALSE IDOLS artists Nabilah Nordin and Otis Hope Carey. The artists will discuss their multimodal practices and share insights about the influences, production methods and concepts behind their artworks in the show. The talk will be facilitated by 4A Curatorial Program Manager Con Gerakaris.

Artist BiographiesNabilah Nordin (b. 1991, Singapore) is a Singaporean/Australian sculptor. Interested in material invention, her installations embrace wonky craftwork, playfully celebrating the visceral and anthropomorphic qualities of materials. Cycles of construction and destruction characterise her studio process. Nordin ‘unlearns’ correct methods and techniques to maintain a state of conscious naïveté. She amplifies sculptural scraps and off-cuts, transforming them into parodies of monumental artefacts. They speak of unbridled ambition and impossible physical challenges. Her ever-expanding sculptural vocabulary strives for the slimy, slopping, seeping, slippery seduction of sensuous surfaces. Forms topple and collapse upon themselves in a nonsensical cacophony of ridiculous attempts to make sculpture. Nordin’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally.Otis Hope Carey (b. 1988, Grafton, Australia) is an artist working across contemporary Indigenous sculpture and painting. Carey’s work reinterprets fragments of traditional symbols and stories to promote a bridging of cultures and understanding across communities. Crucial to Carey’s practice is the sharing of experience and the process of healing, reflecting on the artist’s connection to country, the ocean and ceremony.
