Creating line drawings enhanced with colour, with Tony Walker

Latrobe Art Space

In Tony&#x27;s workshop you will be creating line drawings enhanced with colour. You will have a briefing in the studio and sketch nearby – different subject each workshop.Objectives: Look at materials and setup for outdoor sketching Review how to catch the mood and life of an urban location with an expressive sketch. Decide what to include and how to fit it on the paper and make an effective composition. A few simple principles of perspective that will assist rapid urban drawing. Pick up on details that are important to your intent and how to simplify the subject. Review a way to add colour to a line drawing and limiting the colour palette.Studio BriefingYour workshop will begin with approximately a 30 minute discussion/demonstration inside Latrobe Artspace. Tony will run through some of the points mentioned above and any questions about technique.Keeping the briefing brief – discussion will continue during outside sketching.Outside – the joys of en plein air.Location: You will go nearby – a short walk, eg to Trammies’ Corner vicinity.Setup: For urban sketching Tony uses a folding seat (unless there’s a public seat handy) and he balancesthe board on his lap with pens, paints etc on a small folding stand beside him – all very compact. Astanding easel is an alternative. (He uses an easel when he&#x27;s painting watercolours).Pen/Pencil: Bring a pen - preferably fountain pen - with black ink. He recommends the ‘fude’ nibwhich is slightly bent at the tip (Google ‘fude nib’ to see, ‘Sailor’ is typical brand). Or bring a 0.5mmto 0.7mm black fibre tip drawing pen eg Artline.Otherwise use a 4B pencil if you prefer pencil, but he recommends trying the pen approach.Brushes: Only need a small/medium size mop brush. Tony will also demonstrate with a ‘water brush’Ink or Watercolours: Only the 3 primaries Cadmium Red, French Ultramarine and a warm yellow.Paper: Tony will work on quarter sheets i.e. 1⁄4 of a full watercolour sheet. Bring a light plywood boardabout 1⁄4 sheet size ( i.e. about 26x36cm) to back your sheet of paper.You may prefer a sketch book alternative to the loose sheet (not so handy for display).For sketches Tony prefers hot pressed (smooth) watercolour paper. Bring a few sheets.Accessories: Masking tape, plastic water container, old towel, plastic palette.This workshop is part of the Paddington Urban Art Exhibition, on show at the Latrobe Artspace from 20 - 24 September 2022. The show displays work by Brisbane Urban Sketchers who have been creating sketches and paintings in the suburbs in and around Paddington in preparation. As an Urban Sketcher, Robyn Bauer has also contributed pieces to the show.The Paddington Urban Art Exhibition will also incorporate a glimpse into urban history, with photographs and stories curated by the local online history group Paddington Then and Now.This exhibition is kindly supported by the Brisbane City Council, Cr. Peter Matic of Paddington Ward, Jonty Bush M.P., and Snapshot Storytelling.
