The character-filled streets of Paddington provide artists with a vast array of subjects to draw, paint and photograph. Snapshot Storytelling loves nothing more than to showcase artists who find our workers cottages and historical buildings inspiring!

Sketching with pen and paper allows you to capture the urban landscape with very little equipment. There’s so much you can do with only a few tools.We’ll start in the Latrobe Art Space with a discussion of some perspective principles, use of contrast and shading, and line weights. These techniques will work with just about any pen but we’ll also discuss getting started with fountain pens, affordable fountain pen models, tips for using and maintaining them, and inks that work well for adding washes of tone or colour over line. Next we’ll move on to examining using a limited palette of tones, sometimes just high-contrast black and white, sometimes with a flat grey wash of ink, with arresting compositions to create dynamic and interesting sketches. Essentially this is chiaroscuro for sketching.Finally we’ll move outside to put these ideas into practice in a number of quick vignettes before returning to the Art Space to compare notes.

This workshop is part of the <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/paddington-urban-art-exhibition-tickets-363886302727" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Paddington Urban Art Exhibition</a>, on show at the Latrobe Artspace from 20 - 24 September 2022. The show displays work by Brisbane Urban Sketchers who have been creating sketches and paintings in the suburbs in and around Paddington in preparation. As an Urban Sketcher, Robyn Bauer has also contributed pieces to the show.
The Paddington Urban Art Exhibition will also incorporate a glimpse into urban history, with photographs and stories curated by the local online history group <a href="https://www.paddingtonthenandnow.com.au" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Paddington Then and Now</a>.
This exhibition is kindly supported by the Brisbane City Council, Cr. Peter Matic of Paddington Ward, Jonty Bush M.P., and Snapshot Storytelling.
