This Healthy Development Adelaide forum is held in conjunction with our partner organisation the Women’s and Children’s Health Network.

Mental health issues for children and young people are increasing with COVID-19 having a significant impact. Mental Health Nurses have a pivotal role to respond and care for these children and young people. This HDA presentation shares the diverse roles of nurses within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and how their work supports the mental health and wellbeing of young people in a range of settings.OUR SPEAKERSTim Crowley, Nursing Director / Manager - Acute and Statewide Services / Nurse Practitioner – Complex Care and Trauma Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Women’s and Children’s Health NetworkCare integration considerations for children and young people with acute and complex mental health concerns during the COVID pandemic. Reflecting on developments and the role of CAMHS nurses. Tim is the Nursing Director, Operations Manager of Acute and Statewide Services and the Complex Care and Trauma Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (CAMHS). He has worked both within South Australia and the UK and undertaken therapy training and leadership training at the Anna Freud Centre (UK). His clinical interest is children and young people who have had traumatic and challenging developmental experiences, along with systems integration and innovations in mental health nursing practice. He has authored and developed resources related to complex care, emergency mental health responses for young people and trauma mental health as well as, published articles and book chapters internationally. Tom Sheppard, Nurse Lead / Clinical Coordinator – Emergency Mental Health Services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Women’s and Children’s Health NetworkClinical practice approaches in supporting young people with acute psychological distress during the pandemic.Tom Sheppard is a Mental Health Nurse and the Clinical Coordinator of the Emergency Mental Health Service at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH). He has worked with Children, Adolescents and adults for 30 years and is further trained in Family Therapy. His experience includes senior clinical and managerial roles - currently leading the EMHT team and previously managing the youth mental health services within SALHN and leading an adult day hospital in the UK. He has also been a member of a number of family therapy teams within adolescent and adult mental health services. He has previously been involved in research, looking at the benefit of the use of technology with young people presenting to mental health services and setting up and researching the benefit of group interventions for adolescents presenting with emotional dysregulation and borderline personality disorder. He is currently involved in developing a brief intervention service for young people with emotional dysregulation and suicidal behaviours.Dr Monica McEvoy, Multicultural Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Women’s and Children’s Health NetworkReflections on working in the community to meet the mental health needs of children, young people and families from CALD backgrounds, and the impact of COVID on newly arrived young people and families.Monica is a Registered Nurse with over 25 years experience in child and adolescent mental health. She is endlessly curious about culture and is very grateful to live in a country enriched by such a wide variety of cultures. She is also committed to the development and delivery of mental health services that are respectful of diverse understandings about wellbeing and mental health. She is currently working with young people and their families from culturally diverse backgrounds, many of whom are from new and emerging communities. Jorja Terrell, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Forensic, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Women’s and Children’s Health NetworkCaring for youth involved in the youth justice system during COVID period. Jorja is a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a speciality focus in Forensic Mental Health. Youth involved in the justice system are some of the most vulnerable and at risk young people in our community and Forensic CAMHS provide a specialist mental health service to youth in custody and those involved with the justice system. As a Nurse Practitioner Jorja is an integral part of the team offering a high level of clinical and specialist nursing expertise. Jorja has had a lengthy career in CAMHS in a variety of areas of the service and has been a passionate Mental Health Nurse since 2004.OUR CHAIRDr Jenny Fereday (HDA Ambassador), Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Women’s and Children’s Health Network, Adjunct A/Professor, University of South AustraliaJenny has held senior nursing positions in the areas of clinical, management, education and research in both the public and private sectors. Jenny is the professional lead for all nurses and midwives across WCHN and is involved in leading, and contributing to, decision making for nursing and midwifery at a Network, State and National level. Jenny is committed through her role to improve the health and wellbeing of women, children and young people in South Australia.
