‘Nanna’ Anna has been teaching people about growing and foraging food for 20 years, and has been eating wild foraged mushrooms since she was a child. Her knowledge is broad, and having been a primary school teacher, she uses engaging and easy-to-follow teaching techniques.The Urban Nanna works to educate and inspire people to live more sustainably by adopting Permaculture principles in their everyday lives, no matter where you live. It focuses particularly on how those living in rental properties can adapt traditional permaculture practises to suit their living situations. Follow along on social media for more.

Set in the heart of Eastern Melbourne suburbia, this session with ‘Nanna’ Anna of The Urban Nanna will help you find and identify a range of wild, edible mushrooms found across Victoria.You’ll learn about the basic principles and protocols of foraging, and then move on to mushroom specifics. You’ll examine examples of the types of mushrooms to look for on the day, and be shown the physical features you can use to correctly identify them. There will also be information on how to safely prepare and enjoy eating the mushrooms you find.Included in the session fee is a learning pack to take home with you, a followup list of resources to help you extend your learning, the opportunity to purchase mushroom foraging field guide books, and a tasty hot snack of foraged food.Due to the urban nature of this workshop, the location is subject to change at short notice (depending on the fungi growth), but all alternative locations are in the local vicinity. Overall, there’ll be around 1-2km of walking over grassy terrain involved, with the aim of finding a selection of species for you to practise your ID skills on. Depending on growth and location of our finds, you may also be able to take some home!FAQsAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?Yes. Due to the safety issues involved in identifying edible mushrooms in the wild, this event is limited to participants over the age of 18. What COVID-safe/refund procedures are there for this event?Participants will be required to safely social distance during the workshop, and must abstain from attending if they have COVID or cold/flu symptoms (unless they can provide proof of a negative RAT from that day) or if they are a close contact of someone postitively diagnosed with COVID. Whilst this is a no-refund event for change of mind etc, we will provide a refund or transfer for anyone unable to attend due to unexpected COVID restrictions. Alternatively, you will be able to transfer your ticket for that day to another person at no extra charge. What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?There is free street parking along Stevens Rd. The 765 bus from Blackburn Station stops close to our starting location.What can I bring into to the event?<ul><li>A small basket (if you have one) in case we find enough mushrooms to take home</li><li>Notepad &amp; pen</li><li>Water bottle</li></ul>This is an all-weather event (meaning we will only postpone/cancel in the most extreme of conditions), and because we will be moving around slowly, it’s important to rug up, otherwise the whole experience can become miserably cold quite quickly.<ul><li>long, warm pants (jeans are ideal)</li><li>good weatherproof shoes (sneakers will get very soggy in the damp grass. It’s not pleasant)</li><li>two pairs of socks or thick socks (warm feet can drastically improve your foraging capacity)</li><li>A warm jumper</li><li>Weatherproof jacket in case of drizzle/wind</li><li>a hat and scarf</li></ul>
