Communication is a core clinical skill that is essential to the delivery of safe, high-quality care and can be developed and improved with practice, reflection, lifelong learning, mentorship and support.This intensive program will focus on refining core skills, and conducting complex conversations for chronic and life-limiting illness, such as shared decision-making, lifestyle behaviour change and end-of-life discussions.Hosted by Deakin University's Centre for Organisational Change in Person -Centred Healthcare (OCPH) this residential masterclass will be held at Spicers Guesthouse in the beautiful Hunter Valley providing participants with a relaxed luxury experience set on 40 acres of grounds overlooking the surrounding mountains and vineyards. The pool, fire-pit and views make this the perfect destination to unwind and catch up with colleagues between an intensive learning experience.During the masterclass participants will :<ul><li>Gain awareness of the evidence-based frameworks and models to support effective clinical consultations</li></ul><ul><li>Review the strategies to invite the patient to participate in decision-making and elicit goals and concerns as part of the decision-making process</li></ul><ul><li>Develop skills to observe and deconstruct consultations by analysing patient-clinician interactions</li></ul><ul><li>Develop strategies and practise responses for communication challenges pertinent to communicating risk, discussing prognosis and future care plans</li></ul><ul><li>Apply new skills by engaging in experiential learning with simulated patients and contribute to group experiential learning opportunities</li></ul>Who should attend?All health professionals seeking to further develop and refine key communication skills.

<h2>TERMS AND CONDITIONS</h2>CancellationIf a participant chooses to cancel their confirmed registration, or cannot or does not attend the program, the following fees and conditions will apply:<ul><li>The registered participant may nominate a substitute delegate in their place in the program at no additional charge. To do so, both the registrant and the nominated substitute must provide written notification to ocph@deakin.edu.au at least ten working days prior to the first day of the program.</li><li>The registered participant may alternatively cancel their registration in writing to ocph@deakin.edu.au and pay the applicable cancellation fee. </li><li>Registration cancellations received: </li></ul>On or before 24 July 2022 (91 days prior to the first day of the program) will incur a cancellation fee of 10% of the registration fee including GSTBetween 25 July 2022 and 7 September 2022 (between 91 and 46 days prior to the first day of the program) will incur a cost recovery fee of 50% of your total registration fee including GSTAfter 8 September 2022 (less than 46 days prior to the first day of the program) will incur a cost recovery fee of 100% of your total registration fee including GST.COVID-19 PolicySpicers can't welcome you: Should a government mandated policy based around social gatherings, and food and beverage service, or a lockdown be enforced, and the Spicers Guest house retreat not be able to facilitate the booking, and the amount paid will be held as a credit towards a future masterclass. In the event of postponing or changing dates, the event will take place within 12 months of the original date. <h2>FACILITATORS</h2>Peter Martin, MB BCh BAO, MMed, FAChPMProfessor of Clinical Communication &amp; End-of-Life Care, Deakin University School of MedicineDirector, Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH), Deakin University, Faculty of HealthPalliative Medicine Physician at Barwon Health.Peter has been involved with communication skills training for 25+ years and has been a clinician for over 30 years. His clinical interest is cancer cachexia. He has taught communication skills with Cambridge, Monash, Melbourne and Deakin medical schools. He has taught at numerous postgraduate courses with a variety of health professional disciplines nationally over the last 15+ years.Since becoming the Director of OCPH he has developed and run numerous 1,2 or 3-day courses on healthcare communication including numerous train-the-trainer courses. The OCPH’s major intervention is an organisational level intervention to drive person-centred healthcare communication called Your Thoughts Matter.

Meg ChiswellDeputy Director, Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare, Deakin University, Faculty of HealthMeg originally worked as a Radiation Therapist and educator at RMIT University in Melbourne before moving into strategic oversight of programs at Cancer Council Victoria including 13 11 20 Cancer Information and Support, Cancer Education and Peer Support Programs, and the Victorian Cancer Clinicians Communication Program.Meg has been instrumental in building communication skills programs for health professionals and non-clinical staff working with cancer patients in Victoria. Meg has personally delivered more than 100 experiential healthcare communication skills programs to over 600 professionals.Meg is a member of the International Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH) and is the Australian representative on the teaching subcommittee (tEACH) for this group. In 2016, Meg convened the inaugural Teaching Communication in Healthcare Conference and Education Program in partnership with EACH and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, bringing together more than 120 local and international delegates. Following the success of these events, Meg has worked closely with Peter Martin to establish and lead the Australian tEACH network for communication skills educators in healthcare.

John ReevesClinical PsychologistJohn works in full-time private practice in Gippsland, Victoria as a Clinical Psychologist. He is an Affiliate Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centre Healthcare (OCPH) within Deakin University’s School of Medicine. In 2015, John completed the Clinical Communications Skills Facilitator Training Program at Madingley Hall, University of Cambridge.John has been teaching clinicians and students critical communication skills for almost 20 years and has facilitated workshops for the Victorian Cancer Clinicians Communication program (VCCCP), Monash Rural Health (MRH), the Gippsland Region Palliative Care Consortium (GRPCC), Gippsland PHN and the Latrobe Regional and West Gippsland Hospitals.He has special interest in the treatment of anxiety disorders, in particular treatment of psychological trauma, with extensive experience in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). He has undertaken speciality training in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and is an Accredited EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Practitioner all of which informs his knowledge and clinical experience as a facilitator. John is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS, and the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. He has worked as both a consultant and trainer for Phoenix Australia (formerly the Australian Centre for Post Traumatic Mental Health) and is a former Master Trainer for the highly acclaimed Mental Health First Aid program.
