Our goal is to help people write better songs! Our belief, having worked with thousands of songwriters, is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful and deliberate practice. Our intention is to share the skills, knowledge and ideas that we’ve had the privilege of gathering over the past 20 years, with others who embrace the art and craft of songwriting.

This interactive workshop is packed with tools and techniques for creating memorable melodies that make an emotional impact on your audience

Writing beautiful melodies can seem like a mystical art. But just like chords and lyrics, there are choices we can make that create different effects – we can control the level of tension, the amount of resolution. We can create fragility; we can resound with determination… because your melody is the most important part of the musical story! It dances with the chords but people walk away singing the melody, not the chords. This 90-minute workshop dives into tools, concepts, and techniques for creating melodies that tell a story; melodies that convey emotion, and reinforce the lyrics.By the end of the Workshop, you’ll understand and practice a range of specific choices you can make, and why you would make them when writing your songs. We’ll look at examples in contemporary songs, as well as using a lyric to try out the different concepts in real-time, and seeing the different effects in action. It will be creative, interactive, with plenty of time to answer questions. YOUR RESIDENT INSTRUCTORSThis Workshop is co-taught by Keppie Coutts and Ben Romalis. Keppie:Hey there! I&#x27;m a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I&#x27;ve been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world. I teach for the Berklee College of Music (online, from beautiful Sydney, Australia), for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music&#x27;s Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I&#x27;ve taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting. As a professional songwriter, I work in collaboration with many artists—from Indie bluegrass Canadians, to major label pop acts, and even heavy metal. In the past 12 months, songs I have written or co-written have had over 5.3 million streams on Spotify and YouTube. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I&#x27;ve had the privilege of gathering with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.Benny:Ben&#x27;s passion for music and creativity stretches across multiple disciplines and art-forms. He is a founding member and songwriter / lap-slide guitarist for one of Australia&#x27;s best and most bearded country-bluegrass-folk bands, THE GREEN MOHAIR SUITS. To date the Mohairs have released 4 full-length albums and tour both nationally and overseas.Ben is also the Founder and Head Producer of SILAMOR STUDIOS, a boutique studio specialising in Composition for Film, TV and Interactive Media. He writes extensively across various instrumental and lyric-based genres and has been commissioned for major projects by Adobe, Cathay Pacific and Audible. He also currently releases original songs under the name SILAMOR.Ben is passionate about education and has taught song and lyric writing as well as film composition for JMC Academy and the Australian Institute of Music.
