Urban Foraging 101-1

‘Nanna’ Anna has been teaching people about growing and foraging food for 20 years, and has been eating wild foraged mushrooms since she was a child. Her knowledge is broad, and having been a primary school teacher, she uses engaging and easy-to-follow teaching techniques.The Urban Nanna works to educate and inspire people to live more sustainably by adopting Permaculture principles in their everyday lives, no matter where you live. It focuses particularly on how those living in rental properties can adapt traditional permaculture practises to suit their living situations. Follow along on social media for more.

Workshops

Set in the heart of Eastern Melbourne suburbia, this session with ‘Nanna’ Anna of The Urban Nanna will help you find and identify a range of edible fruits, greens and flowers found in &#x27;wild&#x27; urban spaces across Victoria.You’ll learn about the basic principles and protocols of foraging, and then move on to plant specifics. We&#x27;ll observe and interact with many types of fruit trees, edible green weeds, and useful flowers. We’ll examine examples of trees bearing summer fruit, and you&#x27;ll be shown the physical features you can use to correctly identify useful trees even when they&#x27;re not fruiting. We&#x27;ll discuss the types of locations where you can hunt for wild edibles in the future, and finally how to safely prepare and enjoy eating many of the foods we find.Included in the session fee is a learning pack to take home with you, a tasty afternoon tea picnic made with foraged ingredients, and a followup list of resources to help you extend your learning. This is primarily a learning experience, so you won’t be heading home with baskets full of fruit, but you may get to taste some along the way.Overall, there’ll be around 1-2km of walking over grassy terrain involved, so be sure to dress appropriately. Closed shoes, leg coverings and sun protection are a must.In accordance with government regulations, we will need to sight certificates of vaccination for all students prior to the session, and distance appropriately while moving around the group.FAQsAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?Yes. Due to the safety issues involved in identifying edible plants in the wild, this event is limited to participants over the age of 18. What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?Street parking is available on Stevens Road. The 765 bus from Blackburn Station stops on Jolimont Rd close to our starting location.What can I bring into to the event?- Notepad &amp; pen (if you’re a note taker)Because we will be moving around slowly in open spaces, it’s important to make sure you&#x27;re dressed for the weather. Given we&#x27;re in Melbourne, it could be all seasons in one day! Consider:- sunscreen- closed shoes suitable for walking amongst mid-length grassy terrain- a bottle of fresh drinking water
