<p>Discover what gothic fiction is, how it relates to mainstream writing, and how to write it. Spend time with Kathy George, award-winning author of <em>Sargasso</em>, close-reading famous examples from historical and contemporary gothic literature to see how tone, mood and tension is cultivated. Learn how Australian authors have taken the gothic and made it their own, and how the genre can be utilised to strengthen and improve your own work.</p>

<h3>Learning outcomes:</h3><ul><li>Understand the gothic genre and how to use it</li><li>Distinguish between the gothic/horror/ghost genres</li><li>Learn about the importance of setting and how it can act as a full-blown character</li><li>Discover how romance writing loves the gothic</li><li>Pick up practical tips in a hands-on discussion to strengthen and improve your writing</li></ul>

<h3><strong>Format:</strong></h3><p>This is a <strong>hybrid </strong>workshop with a focus on <strong>craft</strong>; it will be held <strong>in-person</strong> at Queensland Writers Centre and <strong>live streamed </strong>simultaneously to an online audience. It is a<strong> level 2</strong> course for emerging writers but is suitable for writers of all levels.</p>

<h3><strong>About Kathy:</strong></h3><p>Kathy George has a master&#x27;s degree in Australian Gothic Literature from the Queensland University of Technology, and is the author of <em>Sargasso</em>. She has won prizes for her writing and had short fiction published in numerous Australian literary journals including Meanjin and the Big Issue Fiction Edition. She lives in Brisbane.</p>
