Spectrum is a specialist statewide service for personality disorder and complex trauma. Spectrum supports and works with mental health professionals to provide treatment for people aged 16 and over who are assessed as having personality disorder and/or complex trauma. Spectrum provides secondary consultation, training, workforce development, translational research and advocacy as well as direct clinical work for those for whom a specialist service is most appropriate.

[If this workshop is not able to be delivered in person due to imposed COVID-19 restrictions, it will be reverted to an online workshop]<h2>Working with Crises Associated with BPD (1-day)</h2>This one-day workshop is for mental health clinicians working in emergency or crisis services, from emergency departments, triage, crisis assessment teams to case managers actively working in rostered function.The workshop will focus on engaging effectively with clients presenting with BPD who have suicidal ideation and/or non-suicidal self-injury and who require a crisis response. It will include the complexities of assessing and working with risk associated with BPD, and how the National Health and Medical Research Council Guidelines inform risk assessment and effective crisis responses, as well as how clinicians can respond therapeutically to crisis.On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:<ul><li>Demonstrate an understanding of BPD and some of the factors contributing to its development</li><li>Explain the importance of incorporating compassion in the therapeutic relationship. Describe techniques to building a therapeutic relationship </li><li>Describe the impact of transference and counter-transference on treatment planning and collaboration. Highlight the benefit of recovery-focused care</li><li>Distinguish between acute and chronic risk as it relates to suicide and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviour (NSSI) and utilise an appropriate framework to assess this</li><li>Understand the importance of self-care, self-awareness and reflection in the context of counter-transference when engaging with people who have BPD</li></ul>Prerequisite: Previous experience or training in working with people with BPD, e.g. Foundation Training for Working with People with BPD.Presenters :Kat Kahler is a qualified mental health nurse with over 15 years of experience working in acute and therapeutic settings in Victoria, interstate and overseas. Over the past few years she has worked as an emergency mental health Clinician in a Metro Melbourne hospital whilst also working part time at Spectrum and in private practice. Kat enjoys providing clinicians with a space where they can reflect and learn and as such runs a variety of training courses within SpectrumDr Mithira Nithianandan is a consultant psychiatrist at Spectrum Personality Disorder Service. She has had training in dialectical behaviour therapy and metallization based treatment. Dr Nithianandan believes that training and support for the mental health workforce are crucial for addressing the needs of people with personality disorder. She has a particular interest in supporting primary care providers in working therapeutically with clients living with BPD. Who should attend?
