About this event

The 13th annual Deakin University Diwali Festival will once again be located at our stunning Waurn Ponds Campus. Our open campus allows convenient access to all food, activities and entertainment simultaneously, creating a true festival environment.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, an annual celebration that signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. It’s a joyful milestone celebrated by people across the world irrespective of their culture or religion.

There will be:

  • cultural performances
  • DJ
  • food and market stalls
  • free activities and henna art
  • rangoli artwork display
  • spectacular fireworks display!

The Diwali organising committee is now looking for performers and volunteers.

Performance opportunities include:

  • traditional and modern Bollywood dance
  • solo and group performances

Don’t have a group or performance prepared? We are also looking for Deakin staff and students who would enjoy being a part of a choreographed dance. Please note, this will involve attending regular weekly rehearsals at the Geelong Waurn Ponds campus.

Unfortunately we will not be having musical performances this year.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • rangoli art (activity taking place on 4th November at the Waurn Ponds Campus)
  • assistance with decorations
  • event assistance including (set up and pack up, assisting with free activities and marshalling)

Volunteers will be required to attend one of our briefing sessions (approximately one hour) two weeks prior to the event. Briefings will be held online. Duties will be divided into shifts across the day of the event ensuring you will still have time to enjoy the Festival.

We welcome the community to submit an expression of interest to perform, volunteer opportunities are only available for Deakin staff and students from all campuses.

Transport options available for Deakin staff and students from the Burwood Campus pending interest.

We welcome your involvement and look forward to receiving your expression of interest by Friday, 3 September 2021.
