Event description

Description

2019 AUSTRALIAN HUMANIST CONVENTION: THE FUTURE OF AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM
Jointly convened by Murray Love, President of HSNSW and Lyndon Storey, President of CAHS.
This is a convention that gets down to work. Rather than celebrity speakers, there will be sessions with panels of two or more participants, mostly members of Humanist Societies, who each speak briefly, then respond to constructive Q&A.

SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2019
09.00-09.30 Registration

09.30-11.00 THE SURVIVAL OF AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM DEMANDS A SECOND WAVE
This opening session will include keynote addresses from Lyndon Storey & Murray Love. The session will discuss the hard choices we face in the 21st century. The triumphant first wave of 20th century Australian Humanism has lost its force and needs to be replaced. A new century needs a new wave.

11.30-13.00 DEVELOPING AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM THROUGH SIGNATURE CAMPAIGNS
Signature campaigns are those readily identified with the humanist movement, clearly distinguished from other secular or progressive movements. We need to forge humanist identity within an historic movement with a heritage and a destiny, and be living out humanism as a perennial philosophy for all human beings.

14.00-15.30 STRUCTURES & METHODS FOR REVIVING AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM
This panel will examine and outline opportunities and shortcomings regarding structure, assets, governance cooperation, efficiency, media, public relations, and ways to recruit members, volunteers, benefactors, and patrons including informal supporters in high places and the broad community.

16.30-18.00 AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM – PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE - CITY BY CITY
This session will be a panel of presidents of our member societies, responding to the matters profiled in the earlier sessions, showcasing their own local activities, aspirations and assets, and sharing in a lively Q&A.

SUNDAY 23 JUNE 2019

09.00-13.00 BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH ENGAGEMENT AND DIVERSITY
This will be a super-session on effective outreach and community building, with rotating panels and facilitators. We will break for Morning Tea at the midpoint of 10.45-11.15.

14.00-16.00 TOMORROW IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE FUTURE OF AUSTRALIAN HUMANISM
Facilitators will present a summary of each panel’s contributions. Contributions from non-attendees who have sent in material may be read out or summarised. Then all panellists and facilitators will have the opportunity to speak in a super-panel responding to a wide Q&A.

Final allocation of panelists and facilitators will be announced closer to the actual dates. So far the following names have come forward: David Killingly, Murray Love, Fay Love, Mary-Anne Cosgrove, Hilton Kramer, Rod Bower, Liz Forman, Lyndon Storey, Joe Sehee, David Cosgrove, Justin Murray.
